TOP STRATEGIST YOU CAN USE TO IDENTIFY SCAM & HOW TO AVOID SCAMS

WHAT IS SCAMS?

Scams are fraudulent schemes that dupe people into parting with their personal details or cash. They've been around for as long as we can't remember, but they're no longer confined to shady door-to door or salesmen or dodgy second- hand car dealers
scammers now frequently target people through emails, online banking systems, text messages and online transactions. while fraud is becoming ever more sophisticated, people are still getting caught out by traditional scam letters and phone calls. so you need to be wary
some scams are obvious, someone e-mails you to say a distant relative has died, and there's no one but you  to inherit their $100, million fortune- all you need to do is pay $10,000 upfront to release the funds. but some scams are a lot less obvious, and a lot more intelligent. this guide's aimed at helping you spot them

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'VE BEEN SCAMMED

* If you've already responded to a scam, end all further communication immediately!!!
* Call your bank and cancel any recurring payments
* change your password to a strong one

TOP STRATEGISTS TO KNOW SCAM AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

1# PHISHING EMAIL {SCAM ASKING FOR PASSWORD}

Phishing email scams are based on communication via email or an social networks. cyber criminal will send you messages and try to trick you into giving them your login credentials- from your bank account, social network account, work account, cloud storage or any other personal data that can prove to be valuable for them. in order to do that, the phishing email scam will seem to come from an official source- it can be bank authorities or other financial institutes, but also delivery companies or social networks representatives, this way they'll persuade you to click on the links contained by their messages and access a website that look legit, look like the real one, but it's actually controlled by them.you will be sent to a fake login access page that resembles the real website
this way, if you're not paying attention, you might end up giving your login credentials and other personal information
in order for their success rate to grow, the scammers create a sense of urgency. they'll tell you a frightening story of how your bank account is under threat and how you really need to access as soon as possible, a web pages where you must insert your credentials in order to confirm your identity or your account. of course, the provided link will only lead you to the fake website location and not to the real page
After you fill in your online banking credentials, cyber criminals use them to breach your real bank account or to sell them on the dark web to other interested parties. it's one of the main scamming techniques used to spread financial and data stealing malware. there isn't any reason why you shouldn't be very well prepared for this attempt. however, even if you install a good antivirus program, there is no better way to stay safe from this threat but to avoid the initial infection phase

2# DO ONLINE SEARCHES

Type a company or product name into your favorite search engine with word like ''REVIEW'' ''COMPLAINT'' ''SCAM STRATEGIST'' or search for a phrase that describes your situation, like ''how to know fraud'' you can even search for phone numbers to see if other people have reported them as scams

3# CREATE STRONG PASSWORDS AND KEEP THEM SAFE

Passwords can be difficult to remember, especially if you have different passwords for different sites. but it is important to create ''strong'' passwords and not just use your birth date, your address or another easy password that a con artist can guess. strong passwords contain both letters and numbers, making them more difficult for thieves to guess. the strongest passwords include a combination of upper and lowercase letters, some security experts suggest putting numbers in the middle of the password instead of at the beginning or end.
remember the longer the password, the more secure it will be. when you create a password, make sure it is a least eight characters long. finally, select password you can remember but don't use your date of birth, your pet's name, family names or your social security number

4# TALK TO SOMEONE

Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. they might even threaten you. slow down, check out the story, do online search, consult an expert- or just tell a friend

5# YOUR BANK WILL NEVER EMAIL YOU ASKING FOR YOUR PIN OR PASSWORD

If you get an email or text from your bank about fraud, ask your self whether or not that's the usual way you receive contact from your bank, think about whether it's sensible for the bank to make contact in that way. the banker's association's know fraud, no fraud campaign highlights things your bank will never do, including calling or e-mailing to ask you for your full pin or any passwords, bank will also never send someone to your home to collect cash, bank cards etc

6# WATCH OUT FOR POOR GRAMMAR OR DODGY SPELLING

Be vigilant if an email from a ''retailer'' or ''bank'' is badly- worded or littered with spelling mistakes. banks and retailers will spent time crafting any emails they do send, and they're likely to proof them too- so bad grammar, dodgy spelling and poor punctuation are likely to be picked up before any e-mails go out, but phishing e-mails aren't likely to go through such a rigorous process

7# WATCH OUT FOR COMPANIES THAT ADDRESS YOU AS ''DEAR SIR OR MADAM''

Genuine companies should know who they are targeting with e-mails. ''dear customer'' may sound polite, hat or any variation of ''dear sir/ madam' or ''dear valued customer'' should set off alarm bells
many banks will now put something on their emails to identify you- and to reassure you that they know something about you. you'll be addressed by name, and they may put the name of your account or your postcode on the email- information scammers aren't likely to have

8# WATCH OUT FOR FAKE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

We all saw at least once this message on our screens; ''you have been infected!!! download antivirus X right now to protect your computer!!!'' many of these pop-ups were very well created to resemble actual messages that you might get from windows r from a normal security product
if you are lucky, there is nothing more than an innocent hoax that will bother yo by displaying unwanted pop-ups on your screen while you browse online. in this case, to get rid of the annoying pop-ups, we recommend scanning your system using a good antivirus product
if you are not so lucky, you can end up with malware on your system, such as a Trojan or a keylogger
this kind of message could also come from one of the most dangerous ransom-ware threats around, such as cryptolocker,  which is capable of blocking and encrypting your operation system and requesting you a sum of money in exchange for the decryption key.
to avoid this situation, we recommend using a specialized security product against this kind of financial malware, besides your traditional antivirus program

9#  NEVER ENTER PERSONAL INFORMATION IN A POP-UP SCREEN

Do not click on links in a pop-up screen, do not copy web addresses into your browse from pop-ups and legitimate enterprises should never ask you to submit personal information in pop-up screens, so don't do it when conducting online transactions, look for a sign that the site is secure such as a padlock icon on the browser status bar or a ''HTTPS'' URL whereby the ''s'' stand for ''secure'' rather than a ''HTTP''

10# DON'T BELIEVE YOUR CALLER ID

Technology make it easy for scammers to fake caller id information, so the name and number you see aren't always real. if someone calls asking for money or personal information, hang up. if you think the caller might be telling the truth, call back to a number you know is genuine

11# BE WARY OF NUMBERS STARTING WITH 084, 087, 09

Since numbers starting with 084, 087, 09 became premium {this just means call to these numbers are charged at a higher rate} most reputable companies have stopped using them. in their place, scammers have started using these numbers to trick people out of money
the most common scam leaves you with a missed call- in most cases the phone won't have rung for long enough to answer- and when you call back you're hit with a huge bill. even if you don't actually call back your bill could sometimes still show that you've made a call lasting anything up to 12 hours- also resulting in a massive charge. another scam involves text message- the scammers will pretend to be from your bank and warn you that a dodgy transaction is about to take place and you need to call an 084 number to stop it. calls are usually help in a queue before cutting off, but you'll still have to pay a hefty bill. so if you get a text that include your ''banks'' number, always find the number independently before you make a call

12# ROMANCE SCAMS

How many of us have already been fooled by this one? since this one addresses our subjective self and not our rational side, we tend to drop our guard and leave aside any logical analysis, this scam takes place on social dating networks, like Facebook, or by sending a simple email to the potential target. the male scammers are often located in west African, while the female scammers are mostly from the eastern parts of Europe
scam criminals have abused this scamming method for years by using the online dating services. they improved their approach just by testing the potential victims reactions
This scheme or this game may take place for several months or more in order to gain the trust of that person. in most cases, it even goes to the moment when a meeting is arranged
when this happens, two thing may take place;
1} An ''unpredictable'' event occurs and the scammer needs money as soon as possible for his/ her passport or other details
2} if the victim comes from a rich family, he/ she may be kidnapped and a large sum of money could be requested from the family

13# HIT-MEN SCAM

This scam is one of the most frequent scams you can meet online is the ''hitman'' extortion attempt. scam criminals will send you an email threatening you in order to obtain money. this type of scam may come in various forms, such as the one threatening that they will kidnap a family member unless a ransom is paid in a particular time frame provided by the scammers.
To create the appearance of a real danger, the message is filled with details from the victim's life, collected from an online account, a personal blog, or more and more frequently from a social network account
That is why it is not wise to offer sensitive, personal information about you on social media. it might seem like a safe and private place, where you're only surrounded by friends, but in reality you can never know for sure who's watching you

14# MAKE MONEY FAST SCAMS

The following common online scam is extremely popular. cyber criminals will lure you into believing you can make easy money on the internet. they'll promise you non- existent jobs, plans and methods of getting rich quickly and money from official government sources it is quite a simple and effective approach, because it simply address one's basic need for money, especially when that person is in a difficult financial situation. from this point of view, this scamming method is similar to the romance scam mentioned above, where the cyber attackers address the romantic needs of the victim. the fraudulent posting of non- existent jobs for a variety of positions is part of the online criminals arsenal
using various job types, such as work- at- home scams, the various is lured into giving away personal information and financial data with the promise of a well paid job that will bring lots of money in a very short period of time

15# WATCH OUT FOR LOTTERY SCAM

One more classic scam which never seems to get old, the lottery scam come as an e-mail message informing you that you won a huge amount of money and all you need to do to collect your fortune is to pay some small fees. lucky you!!! it doesn't even matter that you don't recall ever purchasing lottery tickets. since it addresses some of our wildest

ONLINE COMMANDMENTS; THE DOS AND DON'T OF ONLINE SAFETY

The best way to protect yourself from anything going wrong is to research before you do

1# CHECK IF THE COMPANY IS REGISTERED

Be wary if it's record show a P.O box address or just an email. get full contact details, include a street address, you can also find out who registered the website, and when, on the WHOIS database, or study the site's worldwide web ranking of Alexa

2# NEVER REUSE YOUR MAIN EMAIL PASSWORD

A scammer who has cracked your main email password has the keys to your virtual kingdom. passwords from other sites you visit can be reset via your main email account. A criminal can trawl through your emails and find a treasure trove of personal data from banking to passport details, including your date of birth, all of which enables ID fraud

3# RUN MORE THAN ONE E-MAIL ACCOUNT

Thinking about having one for your bank and other financial accounts, another for shopping and one for social networks. if one account is hacked, you won't find everything compromised. and it helps you spot scammer phishing e-mails, because if an e-mail appears in your shopping account purporting to come from your bank, for example, you'll immediately know it's a fake

4# GOOGLE FOR COMPLAINTS

The internet is a powerful tools to find other consumers experiences. easiest of all, do a quick google search for the company name next to the word ''complaints'' or ''reviews''
always take one- off complaints with a pinch of salt. it could be a competitor, someone malicious or a customer with a grudge. realistically how often to you go online to rave rather than rant? look for trends instead. any botched jobs or missing orders should quickly show up
4# DON'T STORE YOUR CARD DETAILS ON WEBSITE / EMAIL
On the side of caution when asked if you want to store your credit card, ATM card, details for further use. mass data security breaches {where card details are stole en mass} aren't common but why take the risk? The extra 90 seconds it takes to key in your details each time, is a small price to pay

5# USE DIFFERENT PASSWORDS ON DIFFERENT SITES

with individuals typically having anything up to 100 online accounts, the tendency has become to share one or two passwords across accounts or use very simple ones, such as loved ones names, first pets or favorite sport teams. indeed, research made by me revealed that over half of adult {55%} use the same passwords for most, if not all, website they visit, while one in four {26%} use birthdays or names as passwords. any word found in the dictionary is easily crack-able.
now for every site you log on to, add the first and last letter of that website to the start and end of the phrase. OK let take facebook as an example, the password for face-book should look like this ''FS1*MNWK'' OR ''FS#8^%SK
At first glance, guessable. but for you, still memorable.

6# ENABLE TWO- STEP VERIFICATION

If your email or cloud service offers it- Gmail, Dropbox, Apple and Facebook do, take the trouble to set this up. in addition to entering your password, you are also asked to enter a verification code send via sms to your phone. in the case of g-mail you only have to enter a fresh code every 30 days or when you log on from a different computer or device. so a scam might crack your password, but with out the unique and temporary verification code should not be able to access your account.

7# LOCK YOUR PHONE AND TABLET DEVICES

Keep it locked, just as you would your front door. keying in a password or code 40- plus times a day might seem like a hassle but, say lookout's derek halliday, ''it's your first line of defense'', next generation device. however, are set to employ fingerprint scanning technology as additional security

8# LOCK DOWN YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT

Facebook regularly updates it's time line and privacy settings, so it is wise to monitor your profile
particularly if the design of Facebook has changed. firstly, in the privacy settings menu, under ''who can see my stuff'' change this to ''friends'' be warned; setting this to friends of friends mean that you are sharing information with 167,670 people
Also in privacy setting ''limit old posts'' applies friends- only sharing to past as well as future posts.
thirdly, disable the ability of other search engines to link to your timeline
you should also review the activity log, which shows your entire history of posts and allows you to check who can see them. similarly, you should look at your photo albums and check you're happy with the sharing settings for each album. in the future you may want to consider building ''lists'' subset of friends, such as close friends and family, who you might want to share toddler photographs with, rather than every tom, terry and dick
also remove your home address, phone number, date of birth any any other information that could used to fake your identity, similarly you might want to delete or edit your likes and ''group''- the more scammer know more about you, the more convincing a phishing email they can spam you with. facebook app often share your data, so delete anyone you don't use or don't remember installing. finally, use the ''view as'' tool to check what the public or even a particular individual can see on your profile, continue to ''edit'' and adjust to your taste. if this all sounds rather tedious, you might prefer to permanently delete your account

9# THINK BEFORE YOU TWEET AND HOW YOU SHARE INFORMATION

Again, the principle risk is ID fraud. trawling for personal details is the modern day equivalent of ''dumpster- diving'', in which strong- stomached thieves would trawl through bins searching for personal documents, say Symantec's John. ''many of the same people who have learned to shred documents like bank statements will happily post the same information on social media.
once that information is out there, you don't necessarily have control of how other people use it.''she suggests a basic rule; ''if you aren't willing to stand at hype park corner and say it, don't put it on social media''

10# IF IN DOUBT, BLOCK

Just say no to social media invitations {such as facebook- friend or linkedIn connect requests} from people you don't know. it's the cyber equivalent of inviting the twitchy guy who looks at you at the bus stop into your home

11# ALWAYS CARRY LIGHT WALLET

Another way to prevent identity theft and ATM Card, credit card fraud is to minimize what you carry in your wallet. only carry the ATM Cards you need and don't keep your social security card in your wallet
if you have multiple forms of identification, such as a drive's license, student ID, work ID, and passport. do not carry all of them with you all the time. carry only what you need. also, it's a good idea to photocopy the entire contents of your wallet{the back and front of each card} so you'll have it in case of theft

CONCLUSION ON TOP STRATEGIST YOU CAN USE TO IDENTIFY SCAM

You should always be careful about giving our personal information over the internet, lucky, companies have began to employ tactics to fight against phishers. but they cannot fully protect you on their own and remember that you may be target almost anywhere in the internet, so always keep an eye out for those ''phish'' schemes and never feel pressure to give up personal information online
